Using the Console
While playing, hold down CTRL and ALT and press the ~ (tilde) key to bring down the console window. You can then type in as many commands from the cheat code lists as you want. When you're through, remove the console window the same way you brought it down.
If you want the console to be easier to bring down, type com_allowconsole 1 so that it can be toggled with just ~ from then on. To make that setting permanent, use Microsoft Notepad to create a new file with this line in it: seta com_allowconsole 1. Save the file as AUTOEXEC.CFG in the "Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base" directory on your hard drive. (Note that you can put other customization commands in the same file.)
Remember that bringing up the console does *not* pause the game, though it does temporarily remove your ability to control your character. Be sure that the area is clear of monsters before using the console to do anything (either that, or type *really* fast!).
You can enter a partial command on the console and press TAB to cycle through all of the possible commands that it matches. For instance, type the letter "g" and hit TAB repeatedly to find all the commands that start with G. Another thing you can do is type various list commands, like "listcmds" and "listcvars" to get lists of commands and variables with brief summaries of what they do.
Most of the cheat codes are ones you probably wouldn't type in very many times throughout the game, but if there is one you'll use frequently, you can bind it to a key. For instance, to bind the "noclip" code to the N key, bring up the console and type: bind n noclip. Now you can press N at any time during gameplay to toggle no-clipping mode, which can frequently be handy for getting past pesky areas. (If you want to undo a binding, either bind the same key to something else or just unbind it, as in: unbind n.) You can bind more than one command to a single key by using quotes and a semicolon, as in: bind g "give ammo; give health; give armor".
You can use the PgUp and PgDn keys on the keyboard (*not* on the numeric keypad) to page up and down through the console's current contents. This is mainly useful when you issue a command that produces more than a screenful of output.
