The Well in the Bath-House

  • 1 of 19: All truly great adventures have a well that you must go down!
  • 2 of 19: Unfortunately the one in the bath-house is filled with water.
  • 3 of 19: The metal bucket suspended over the well is ideal for scooping out water.
  • 4 of 19: The bucket is attached to a type of balance.  At the other end of the balance is a straw basket.
  • 5 of 19: To use the metal bucket you "click" on the balance.
  • 6 of 19: You won't be able to move it unless the balance is evenly weighted.
  • 7 of 19: Next to the straw basket is a bath with 7 millstones in it.
  • 8 of 19: The millstones are all of different sizes.
  • 9 of 19: Each one appears to be double the size of the one smaller than itself.
  • 10 of 19: Now for a bit of lateral thinking...
  • 11 of 19: If the smallest millstone weighs 1 unit, then the one that is double its size weighs 2 units.
  • 12 of 19: The next biggest millstone (double the size) weighs 4 units, and so on.
  • 13 of 19: Following this logic, the millstones weigh 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 units respectively.
  • 14 of 19: There is a strange symbol on the straw basket.
  • 15 of 19: How about trying to visualize the "mirror-image" of the symbol?
  • 16 of 19: It would look very much like the number "22".
  • 17 of 19: Maybe if the straw basket weighed 22 units it would be the same weight as the metal bucket!
  • 18 of 19: You are able to put the millstones into the straw basket.
  • 19 of 19: The millstones weighing 2, 4 and 16 units have a total weight of 22.
