The Altar Puzzle

  • 1 of 37: At the end of the road that begins near where you arrived, is a stone structure which appears to be an old temple. The altar is inside the temple.
  • 2 of 37: The altar is activated by the golden skull.
  • 3 of 37: To the left of the altar is a square pillar with a black ball on top of it.
  • 4 of 37: To the right of the altar is a similar square pillar with another round pillar protruding from the top of it.
  • 5 of 37: Examine the round pillar and then place the golden skull on top of it -- this activates the altar.
  • 6 of 37: The control panel has 16 buttons, each having a strange symbol on it.
  • 7 of 37: Do some of the symbols look familiar?
  • 8 of 37: Did you take a close look at the 3 stone pillars at the side of road on your way here?
  • 9 of 37: Each of the pillars had a symbol on it -- you would also have heard a word being uttered in the distance while looking at it.
  • 10 of 37: The symbols and the words are the key to this puzzle.
  • 11 of 37: Each symbol resembles an animal of sorts. Those common to the buttons AND the pillars look very much like a lion, a horse and a pair of worms. (Marked L, H and W respectively in the graphic display.)
  • 12 of 37: There is a 4th symbol (which resembles a crab) on some of the buttons, but it is not needed to solve the puzzle.
  • 13 of 37: As you push each button, you hear a word being spoken out loud.
  • 14 of 37: You should recognize 3 of the words from those heard at the pillars.
  • 15 of 37: There are 4 different words: ENLI / NOSKU / ENKI / ANTU
  • 16 of 37: The first 3 are the ones you heard at the pillars.  As with the symbols, the 4th word is not needed to solve the puzzle.
  • 17 of 37: ENLI, NOSKU and ENKI are the names of 3 rituals that can be performed at the altar.  You need to find out what the rituals are, and how to perform each one.
  • 18 of 37: Press each of the buttons with the "lion" symbol and note which word you hear. (L4, L7, L9 and L14 in the graphic display)
  • 19 of 37: The word you heard at the corresponding pillar will be heard more than once.
  • 20 of 37: The word is ENLI.
  • 21 of 37: Now press only the buttons which have both the "lion" symbol AND which generate the word ENLI.  (Randomly generated)  
  • 22 of 37: This will perform the WIND ritual (ENLI = WIND).
  • 23 of 37: Press each of the buttons with the "horse" symbol and note the word you hear. (H3, H6, H8 and H13 in the graphic display)
  • 24 of 37: The word you heard at the corresponding pillar will be heard more than once.
  • 25 of 37: The word is NOSKU.
  • 26 of 37: Now press only the buttons which have both the "horse" symbol AND which generate the word NOSKU.  (Randomly generated)
  • 27 of 37: This will perform the FIRE ritual (NOSKU = FIRE).
  • 28 of 37: Press each of the buttons with the "worms" symbol and note which word you hear. (W1, W10, W12 and W15 in the graphic display)
  • 29 of 37: The word you heard at the corresponding pillar will be heard more than once.
  • 30 of 37: The word is ENKI.
  • 31 of 37: Now press only the buttons which have both the "worms" symbol AND which generate the word ENKI.  (Randomly generated)
  • 32 of 37: This will perform the WATER ritual (ENKI = WATER).
  • 33 of 37: To complete the puzzle, you must get all 3 rituals up and running at the same time.
  • 34 of 37: Are you having a problem with the water dousing the flames?
  • 35 of 37: Perhaps you should try to increase the intensity of the fire.
  • 36 of 37: Start by performing the FIRE ritual, then "fan" the flames by performing the WIND ritual.
  • 37 of 37: You now have a powerful enough fire to withstand the gushing water.
