How can I open the safe in the room with the circular code display?

1 of 8: The first hint is in the same room.
2 of 8: Next to the safe, there is a piece of paper on the table.
3 of 8: This piece of paper has three symbols.
4 of 8: To continue with this puzzle, you have to enter Kales' observation room, but this is only possible after you come back from the inside. (See Can I come back to this area once Kales let me in?)
5 of 8: On Kales' bed (under his cushion) you can find a notebook that repeats the symbols you found on the paper.

When you hold the book, you can see a chart lying on the bed, which decodes these symbols into positions.
