Riven: The Sequel to Myst Hints
How do I get off Riven?
of 12: Try to solve every other puzzle first. This includes getting to the Age of the Moeity (and then reading Catherine's journal) and freeing Catherine. You really won't have the information you need to leave the island before then, or if you do and try to leave, you'll get something less than an optimal ending.
of 12: Catherine's journal describes a telescope that looks into the Star Fissure. It was very close to where you started the game, on Dome Island.
of 12: You need to open that fissure.
of 12: By dropping the telescope through it.
of 12: Follow the instructions in the journal, and you should be in pretty good shape.
of 12: Start by entering in the code to the viewport, which was given to you in the journal in Riven numbers. Just press the buttons in the order indicated there. (The solution changes from game to game, so I can't give you an answer here.)
of 12: Now, you need to release the stop that prevents the telescope from entering the Fissure. It's on the left side of the base of the telescope.
of 12: Finally, you need to figure out how to change the position of the telescope. The controls aren't documented, but they are there.
of 12: The button on the right of the telescope raises or lowers it.
of 12: Depending on the position of the lever that's attached to the button.
of 12: Pull the lever down to set the telescope into "lower" mode, and then keep pushing the button to lower the telescope until you've broken through the Fissure.
of 12: At this point, you're finished! In the optimal ending, Catherine and Atrus will both return to D'ni, the Moeity will all be free, and you will drift through the Fissure, presumably to return home. If not all of these things happened, you probably forgot to take care of Gehn or free Catherine.
