Riven: The Sequel to Myst Hints

What do I do with the ring of stones with animal carvings on them?

  • 1 of 17: Where are these stones?
  • 2 of 17: All of the clues you need are here on this island.
  • 3 of 17: Have you seen any animals about?
  • 4 of 17: Not just live ones -- things shaped like animals will do.
  • 5 of 17: Animals generally have eyes.
  • 6 of 17: There are five wooden eyes on this island.  Look for those, and you'll be on the right track to figuring out which symbols to press.
  • 7 of 17: Each eye has a number on it -- just click on it to turn the eye around and reveal the associated number.  Pay attention to this number.
  • 8 of 17: There are then two ways of associating the eyes with an animal.  One is by listening to the sound that the eye makes when you rotate it and trying to match the sound to something else in the game.
  • 9 of 17: The other is just to look at the eye from a distance.  If you stand in the right place at a bit of a distance, you should be able to see the shape of an animal with an eye in the middle.
  • 10 of 17: Read the following hints to find out where the eyes are and how you can find the corresponding animals.
  • 11 of 17: Once you've found the five eyes, you want to depress the stones in the order indicated by the numbers on the eyes.  It still may be a bit difficult to match the stylized drawings to the stones, but at this point, there's really no puzzle solving involved.  Read ahead for an answer if you still can't figure this out.
  • 12 of 17: As you're facing the door, press the sixth full stone from your left (i.e., don't count the stone which is only half on this view).
  • 13 of 17: Then, press the first full stone from your left.
  • 14 of 17: Next, turn to your right and press the second full stone from your left.
  • 15 of 17: Turn to your right again and press the furthest right stone.
  • 16 of 17: Finally, press the center stone.
  • 17 of 17: The niche with the knife symbol drawn on it should open to reveal a linking book.  If it doesn't, try raising all the stones, starting with the last one you lowered, and repeat this process.
