Riven: The Sequel to Myst Hints
I can climb a ladder, but all it leads to is a hatch that's closed.
of 22: You can only open that hatch from the other side. You'll need to find another way up the cliff.
of 22: There's really no way to know what that other way is, except through trial and error. Read ahead for the answer in the next hint.
of 22: You need to go through the giant boiler.
of 22: There is a pipe at the bottom of the boiler that will lead to the top of the cliff.
of 22: But first, you need to empty the boiler.
of 22: In case you haven't noticed, just about everything on this island is powered by steam.
of 22: And there are valves in several places that direct the flow of steam (and thus power).
of 22: The trick to emptying the boiler is determining how to power the necessary devices. Once you've done that, trial and error should give you the rest of the solution.
of 22: There are two key valves you should concentrate on setting.
of 22: One is in the middle of the lake.
of 22: The other is near the boiler itself, on the back side. It's on a Y-shaped pipe on the screen just to your left as you're facing the boiler.
of 22: Start by turning the one in the middle of the lake to the middle (of three) positions. This will supply power to the boiler in general.
of 22: The other valve will supply power to one of the controls at a time. Read ahead if you can't figure out what the controls are for.
of 22: There are three controls on the boiler. The wheel determines whether the boiler has water in it. The switch will raise and lower a floor inside the boiler. The valve on the right turns the flame underneath the boiler on and off.
of 22: You can only enter the boiler when it's turned off. The door will not open if the boiler's on.
of 22: The wheel only operates when the valve close to the boiler is in the up position. The switch only works when the valve is in the down position. The lever works in either case.
of 22: Start by turning off the boiler, so you can get in.
of 22: Hmm ... there's a lot of water in here still.
of 22: So turn the wheel (make sure the Y-valve nearby is up) to empty the boiler.
of 22: But the floor is too low to do you any good.
of 22: Move the Y-valve down and flip the switch, to raise the floor.
of 22: You can now go down the pipe. Keep going forward, even when all you see is black. You should eventually reach the end, and once you're out of the pipe, you'll be on the top of the cliff. You can open the hatch from the other side and now go up and down the ladder.
