Saving games
You can die in ROTS. And unlike some other games, there is no automatic "replay" that allows you to avoid that last step, or back up to just prior to the action that resulted in your death.
As a result, you should save games whenever you are about to enter a new area or try something that could be either dangerous or have unknown results. Saved games in ROTS are stored in individual files you choose in the normal Windows save dialog box. This has several distinct advantages: first, the name of the saved game can be anything you can name a file -- including descriptive titles such as "First visit to the Sphinx after arriving at camp". Second, there is no limit to the number of saved games that you can have. So save often.
