Rise of the Triad: Dark War Hints
I don't find this game fun! What should I do?
First off, Rise of the Triad probably won't appear fun if you're a Doom junkie. I mean, the engine DOES have kind of a 2D feel.
The way I see it, the reason Doom is so popular is because of it's utter simplicity: run around and shoot things. This is probably the reason many people still play Doom today, even though they've beaten in several times over. Face it, it's fun to shoot things. The other 3D games weren't the same -- there weren't enough weapons in Wolfenstein 3-D to make it as much fun; Dark Forces is bloodless and doesn't quite have the satisfaction of blowing stuff to bits; and Descent seemed more about getting lost and sizzling robots than pure mindless fun.
ROTT, on the other hand, is so simple -- just like Doom, but with lots more blood. At that point, I no longer felt the urge to blow away a charging Demon with a Super Shotgun: now, I wanted to dismember Triad Enforcers with a Split Missile or burn irritating monks to a crisp with a Flamewall. Bigger explosions, gore overkill -- just the thing after a stressful day! Plus, the developers have a wacky sense of humor that some of us can relate to (honestly, who thought up Dog Mode?).
However, if you've tried all of the cheat codes and just don't find it fun, there's not much I can say. Some people love ROTT with all of their hearts; but then again, some people hate it. So try the shareware version first.
