Return to Mysterious Island Hints

What do I do with the malfunctioning robot lying on the beach?

  • 1 of 20: Note the flashing red lights on the robot's panel.  Maybe Mina can do something with that to disengage the robot.
  • 2 of 20: Clicking on the red lights opens a panel that shows a keypad with a 4-letter readout above it, and 4 red lights at the bottom.
  • 3 of 20: Experiment with the keypad to see what happens.
  • 4 of 20: The keypad is used to enter a 4-digit number into the bottom readout.
  • 5 of 20: Apparently, the 4-digit number must relate to the 4-letter readout at the top of the panel.
  • 6 of 20: Note that each time you leave this puzzle, and then re-enter it again, the 4-letter combination is different.
  • 7 of 20: You might even want to try this a few times, just to see what 4-letter combinations are being generated.
  • 8 of 20: The 4-letter combinations are actually random -- and yet...
  • 9 of 20: ... the letters don't seem to randomly span the 26 letters of the alphabet.
  • 10 of 20: It's almost as if they're being selected from a very small number of letters...
  • 11 of 20: What were these robots originally guarding?
  • 12 of 20: They all came from Captain Nemo's ship...
  • 13 of 20: ... the Nautilus.
  • 14 of 20: And with very few exceptions, the letters that show up "randomly" in the top readout all are found in the word "NAUTILUS".
  • 15 of 20: So how can we use that information to generate a 4-digit code?
  • 16 of 20: Thankfully, the word "NAUTILUS" is less than 9 characters long.
  • 17 of 20: Which means that we could use each letter of the 4-letter "clue", and find its position in the word "NAUTILUS", with the result being a single digit.
  • 18 of 20: Use the letter placement in the word "NAUTILUS", and key in the digits.
  • 19 of 20: Either "3" or "7" can be used for a "U", since the letter appears in both places.  (If a letter in the "clue" isn't in the word "NAUTILUS",  use the "0" key.)
  • 20 of 20: Take the key and thruster lying next to the dismantled robot.
