Return to Mysterious Island Hints

Is there something I'm supposed to do with the organ?

  • 1 of 33: The organ is another one of the optional puzzles in this game.  It is not necessary to solve this particular puzzle to complete the game.
  • 2 of 33: However, it is one of the two "final puzzles" in the game.  You must solve one of these two puzzles to complete the game.
  • 3 of 33: It is not possible to solve both "final puzzles"; completing either one will go directly to the "end game" cut scene.
  • 4 of 33: You can either solve the robot puzzle, or solve the organ puzzle.  Continue reading for hints on the organ puzzle.
  • 5 of 33: First of all, to solve the organ puzzle, the organ must be opened and turned on.
  • 6 of 33: There doesn't seem to be any way to do that from the organ console itself.
  • 7 of 33: You're going to need to get into the Captain's safe to accomplish this.
  • 8 of 33: Inside -- among many other items (mostly useful to the other "end game" puzzle) -- you will find two switches.
  • 9 of 33: The left switch opens the two side windows, giving a nice underwater view of the sea bed.
  • 10 of 33: The right switch opens the organ keyboard and turns it on.
  • 11 of 33: What happens when you walk over to the organ, once it has been turned on?
  • 12 of 33: Note that there is music in place on the organ, and you have a close-up view of the music on the left side of the screen.
  • 13 of 33: What happens if you pull on the blue handle to the left of the music score?
  • 14 of 33: The organ (evidently a "player organ") plays what is written on the musical score.
  • 15 of 33: Have you heard this "sound byte" before?
  • 16 of 33: It is the same theme as what you hear from time to time as you are exploring around Captain Nemo's quarters...
  • 17 of 33: ... except that it seems to be missing some notes.
  • 18 of 33: Continue to explore the organ.
  • 19 of 33: It looks like many of the keys still work -- although some are apparently broken, and will not play.
  • 20 of 33: Is there any way we can help complete the musical "theme" that the good Captain loved so much?
  • 21 of 33: Have you seen anyplace else in the game where you found something musical?
  • 22 of 33: Take the scrap of music that you found in Granite House...
  • 23 of 33: Add it to the musical score already on the organ.  (You will also see it added to the close-up view on the left side of the screen.)
  • 24 of 33: All that is needed now is to play the notes on the torn manuscript that has been added to the original music.
  • 25 of 33: It is not necessary to play (or re-play) the original music; just play the six notes on the scrap found by the Captain's body.
  • 26 of 33: If you read music, this will be a trivial task.
  • 27 of 33: If not, you can either experiment (based on the musical notes on the paper), or continue reading for a key-by-key solution.
  • 28 of 33: First of all, the music is in all flats -- in this case, this means that the six notes you will need to play will all be on the black keys.  (No white keys will be played.)
  • 29 of 33: You might look at how the notes are going up or down, and try to figure out exactly which six of the black keys to press, and in what order.
  • 30 of 33: If you use this approach, try to guess -- based on the vertical spacing between the notes (and the lines that separate them) -- which keys to press.
  • 31 of 33: If you feel musically challenged, but still want to finish the game via this method, then the full solution follows.
  • 32 of 33: Labeling the organ's black keys 1 to 7 (left to right), and only counting the "good" keys (i.e., the keys that play, and are not broken), there are seven "good" black keys.  In order, click on the 5th, 7th, 3rd, 5th, 1st, and 2nd black keys.
  • 33 of 33: Once your identify has been confirmed, the robot will accede to your request, and raise the shields for the island.  Sit back and enjoy the end game cut-scene.
