Runaway: A Road Adventure Hints

How do I measure 40cc's of gas?

  • 1 of 13: This is actually a rather famous puzzle -- you might have seen a similar form of it elsewhere.
  • 2 of 13: Start by taking a look at the equipment you've got -- the tank of gas itself, a 30 cc measuring tube, and a 50 cc measuring tube.
  • 3 of 13: Ultimately, you want to end up with 40 cc's of gas in the 50 cc tube, since this is the only tube that holds that much.
  • 4 of 13: Note that you can pour gas from the tank to either tube, and from one tube to the other.  Consider the effect of each of these actions carefully.
  • 5 of 13: With some planning, you should be able to get exactly 40 cc's into the 50 cc tube.
  • 6 of 13: The exact actions you need to perform are as follows:
  • 7 of 13: Pour the tank into the 50 cc tube.  (30 cc is empty, 50 is full)
  • 8 of 13: Pour the 50 cc tube into the 30 cc tube.  (30: full, 50: 20)
  • 9 of 13: Empty the 30 cc tube into the gas tank.  (30: empty, 50: 20)
  • 10 of 13: Pour the 50 cc tube into the 30.  (30: 20, 50: empty)
  • 11 of 13: Pour the tank into the 50 cc tube.  (30: 20, 50: full)
  • 12 of 13: Pour the 50 cc tube into the 30.  The 50 cc tube now contains 40 cc's of gasoline.
  • 13 of 13: If you get mixed up at any step along the way, just empty out the tubes and start over again.
