Safecracker: The Ultimate Puzzle Adventure Hints

How do I open the safe with the broken dial?

  • 1 of 10: This one looks obvious -- the post-it tells you the combination, which is 5841. Great!
  • 2 of 10: But when you press those buttons, the readout says 6922. Wha?!
  • 3 of 10: The buttons must be miswired. Maybe if you could figure out how the buttons *are* wired, you could just press the buttons you really need.
  • 4 of 10: Ah, but it's not that simple. Each press of a button seems to change its wiring, so the next time you press it you get a different number than you got the first time. Argh!
  • 5 of 10: Wait a minute, though; they may be erratic, but they're not random. The numbers do actually repeat.
  • 6 of 10: That is, if you press 1 four times, you get 2, 7, 9, 4; if you then press it four more times, you get 8, 2, 7, 9. So the 1 key cycles between five numbers: 2, 7, 9, 4, 8. See?
  • 7 of 10: So what you need to do is map all the keys, then figure out a way to press the required keys that number of times to get to 5841. For example, if you press 6 twice, you get 5; so you might come up with one set of numbers that has a 6 in it, and then the next time put the 6 first so it reads out as 5.
  • 8 of 10: Yeah, sure, clear as mud. Here are the key patterns, if you want to work it out yourself.
  • 9 of 10: There are lots of ways to get where you need to go; here's how I did it.
  • 10 of 10: Enter 3456; enter 5699; enter 3456 again, and you're done.
