How do I open the safe without a keypad?
1 of 7: Well, first you need a keypad, clearly. You'll find one in the music box in The Violet Bedroom.
2 of 7: After you insert the keypad (what the inventory calls "screen and keycard reader," even though it isn't and you don't need a keycard here), it's time to play guess the combination. The reader shows you part of the combination, but it's malfunctioning and only part of each number is visible.
3 of 7: This is another puzzle where the safe will help you out. Press four numbers at random; one of the bars at left will pull aside briefly for each number that's right. But it doesn't tell you which number, and it doesn't tell you if you've got it in the right position.
4 of 7: You can narrow down which numbers are in the solution by pressing each number four times and seeing if it makes a bar move: 1111, then 2222, and so on.
5 of 7: This shows you that the four numbers are some combination of 6, 7, 8, and 9. That simplifies things a lot.
6 of 7: The only one that can be a 7 is the second one, and the only one that can be a 6 is the last one. The first and third numbers could both be either 8 or 9, but you're so close now you can try them both: 8796 and 9786. The correct number is --
