Safecracker Hints
General Playing Tips
Once a safe is opened, take everything inside. Once you leave an open safe, it closes and cannot be re-opened.
There are several items which may be picked up, but which are not actually required to complete the game. There are also a few clues which don't have a purpose, except to mislead.
As you play the game, check the top of the screen for the name of the room you are currently in. The number of the room is at the top right corner.
The game includes solutions to all the safes. Clues are either scattered throughout the rooms of the house, or locked inside other safes. The items inside the safes may be picked up and carried with you, but for the clues scattered elsewhere, you will need to make notes.
An alternative to note-taking is to do a print screen. When you find something interesting and you think you may want an exact copy, press the Print Screen button to save the screen to the clipboard. Type Alt-Esc to bring up the taskbar, click on Start, go into Programs, then Accessories. Click on Wordpad, and select Paste. The Safecracker screen will be displayed. From here, the Safecracker screen may either be sent to the printer, or saved as a file.
Safecracker keeps track of real time. A clock in the bottom left corner continues to count the minutes of gameplay, even when the game is idle. If you need to leave the computer, click on the "Pause" button, accessible from the "Menu". Note that the pause button will only work while the computer is not being used at all. In other words, if you press the "Pause" button and leave the computer, it will work. But, if you click the "Pause" button and switch to another window, the clock will start again.
Save often, just in case you will need to restore to an earlier time. Or better yet, use this trick to keep the time used to an absolute minimum: Save the game and explore part of the building carefully. When you find something to pick up or you've figured out how to open one of the safes, restore from the earlier save. Go directly to the new item or the new safe; and either pick up the item or open the safe. Immediately create a new save, and start exploring carefully again.
If you have difficulty navigating around the building, it may help to refer to the compass in the lower right corner.
