How does the in-game hint system work?
If you have the game set to give you hints (in Options), Max will occasionally just start talking, especially if you're not doing anything. His comments sometimes seem irrelevant, but you need to listen; they'll often tell you what to do next. For example, if Max suddenly says, "I'm bored. Can we go somewhere else?" you need to try another location to move the game along.
Talking to Max directly is interesting and funny, but not particularly helpful in solving the puzzles or figuring out what to do next.
You can change the amount of hinting Max does by going into the Options menu and changing the hint level, from "No hints" to "Frequent hints."
