The Secrets of Atlantis Hints

How can I get out of the weird thing I'm locked into?

  • 1 of 13: After being relieved of the bas-relief, you'll wake up to find yourself locked into a kind of stand-up sarcophagus.
  • 2 of 13: Right in front of you is a very large puzzle that you'll need to solve in order to get out of the sarco thing.
  • 3 of 13: The first thing to note is that this considerate puzzle has a reset button just above it. That means there's no need to have a save where the puzzle is in its starting configuration -- you can just hit the reset button at any time.
  • 4 of 13: Looking over the puzzle's surface, you'll see that there are nine rows and nine columns, for a total of 9 X 9 = 81 squares, some of which are filled in and some of which are blank.
  • 5 of 13: You can click on any blank square to cycle it through its ten different possible settings.
  • 6 of 13: Also note that the 9 X 9 board is subdivided up into a 3 X 3 set of smaller squares, each of which is a 3 X 3 array of tiles.
  • 7 of 13: If this doesn't suggest the recent Sudoku puzzle "craze" to you, then nothing will.
  • 8 of 13: As with standard Sudoku puzzles, the following parts must contain one each of the nine different non-blank symbols: all rows of nine tiles, all columns of nine tiles, and all 3 X 3 squares of tiles.
  • 9 of 13: The most useful Sudoku-solving strategy is to first find all the items (rows, columns, 3 X 3 squares) that have the fewest blank tiles, since they'll usually be the easiest to complete.
  • 10 of 13: Also, every time you think you've set a tile right, make sure it's not set the same as any other tile in its row, column, or 3 X 3 square. If it does match any others, then it's wrong, and needs to be changed. (This fact can often be used to narrow down the possibilities.)
  • 11 of 13: This particular puzzle is fairly hard, not only because it doesn't use familiar symbols like numerical digits, but also because it doesn't have any rows, columns, or 3 X 3 squares that start out with only one or two blank tiles.
  • 12 of 13: Below, I give some starter hints, plus a complete solution graphic that you can reveal all at once or one 3 X 3 square at a time.
  • 13 of 13: When all 81 of the puzzle's squares are correctly set, you'll be released from the sarcophagus thing.
