Schizm Hints
What is that pattern, and how does it help me?
of 14: The only real way to figure out the pattern is through trial and error. If you don't feel like figuring this out, you can simply skip ahead to the answers in the previous question.
of 14: When the object is in the "first" tulip (i.e., the tulip furthest from you, or where the object starts), any click of the dials will send the object forward (to you).
of 14: When it's in the "second" tulip, the object always goes backward. This means that if you click on the one-notch dial at the very start of the puzzle, you'll have no valid moves, and the puzzle will reset itself. (Your only remaining options would send the object back 2 or 3 spaces, off the board.)
of 14: The "third" tulip always sends the object forward. This means, for example, that if you click one of the two-notch dials at the start of the puzzle, the object will move forward on the next move that you make.
of 14: The "fourth" tulip is the tricky one. It reverses the direction of the object on your next move. For example, if you start out moving the object three spaces forward on your first move, the object moves backward the next time. But it is possible later in the puzzle to move the object backwards into tulip #4 -- the next click will then send the object forward.
of 14: Read ahead for the four remaining bulbs:
of 14: Tulips #5 and #6 always sends the object back to the start. Tulip #7 always sends the object forward.
of 14: Once you know this pattern, it is possible to work in reverse (from the finish) a bit.
of 14: You know you need to reach the final bulb #8 from #7, as #7 is the only forward-moving bulb that's close enough to the end.
of 14: You must also reach tulip #7 from tulip #4, again, because it's the only choice close enough.
of 14: Remember that tulip #4 only sends an object forward if it came in to #4 moving *backwards*.
of 14: So you have to come into tulip #4 from either #5 or #6.
of 14: But you already know your final move is going to be a single step from tulip #7 to #8 -- and you only have one dial that moves the object a single step. That means you must come in from tulip #6.
of 14: You can continue working in reverse like this to get the remaining moves, or you can return to the previous question if you want the answer spelled out for you.
