I've made some readings; how do I translate them to actual measurements?
1 of 16: Remember that a sextant works on simple geometric principles.
2 of 16: Look at the drawing on the wall upstairs in the control room in the Temple. Specifically, note the triangular drawing. Do you recognize some of the symbols on the drawing?
3 of 16: The symbols match symbols on the sextant.
4 of 16: The sextant will give you an actual distance to the object, and a relative height measurement.
5 of 16: You will need to apply some ratios to obtain the actual heights.
6 of 16: The drawing on the wall shows two triangles -- one "nested" inside another.
7 of 16: The ratio of the height of the smaller triangle to the width of its base is the same as the ratio of the height of the larger triangle to the width of its base. (This ratio is referred to as the "tangent" of the angle that they share.) For example, if the smaller triangle were half as tall as the larger triangle, it would also be half as wide.
8 of 16: The sextant gives you the readings for the base of the smaller triangle, and the height of the smaller triangle. It also provides a reading for the horizontal distance from the *far end* of the sextant to the measured object -- which is *part of* the base of the larger triangle, the part that's not part of the smaller triangle.
9 of 16: The base of the smaller triangle is the fixed length of the sextant itself.
10 of 16: Note that it is set to 10 units of measure. (A scale in the middle of the sextant tells you this.)
11 of 16: The height of the smaller triangle is represented by the height of the upper measurement on the sextant -- typically ranging from 4 to 7 units.
12 of 16: The distance from the sextant to the object being measured can be found by reading the dial at the bottom of the sextant controls.
13 of 16: Remember to reset this dial to 0 before each reading -- or else the distances will "accumulate".
14 of 16: Reset to zero by pressing the "0" button.
15 of 16: Make a measurement by pressing the "+" button.
16 of 16: Remember that this measurement is from the END of the sextant to the object. So the TOTAL distance to the object is the measurement PLUS 10 -- because the sextant itself is 10 units long. This diagram may help you visualize what it is that you're looking at.
