I'm not certain I understand, could you explain it again?

  • If each gas were the same strength, and you pushed the first lever once, the second lever twice, and so on for all ten levers, then the total on the meter would be 55 (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10).  But since one gas is twice as strong, your result will be more than 55.  The lever that dispenses the stronger gas "moves" every time you try this puzzle -- so you'll need to read the meter to determine the actual total for the gas and compare it to 55 in order to determine which lever dispenses the stronger gas.

    If the fifth lever (the one you pushed five times) was the one that was twice as strong, then that gas would count for double on the meter (10 units of gas, rather than 5 -- in other words, 5 units more than regular strength gas). So, if the fifth lever dispensed the stronger gas, then the result on the meter would be 60 (55 plus the 5 extra units from the lever pressed 5 times).  So, if we knew which lever dispensed the stronger gas, we could predict the result on the meter. 

    Since we don't know which lever dispenses the strongest gas, we need to turn that logic around and take the final result from the meter (in this example, 60) and determine which lever gave that result by subtracting 55.  The result, in this example, would be 5 (60 minus 55) -- which tells you the stronger gas was the one dispensed by the lever which was pressed 5 times.

    Again, remember that what you read on the meter will randomly change every time you play the game, but no matter what you see, the same method will always work.  You may read a number anywhere between 56 and 65 on the meter.  Subtract 55 from that number and press the corresponding lever.  In other words...
