Scratches Hints
Where is this located?
1 of 11: The open window (shown at the very left of the picture), as well as the shadow of the tower, and the large, round rocks scattered about, all indicate that the spot where James was digging is somewhere along the path going toward the chapel.
2 of 11: Michael will also need something to dig with.
3 of 11: The clues you have are a) the general location (the side of the house, near the path to the chapel); and b) the precise spot, based on the shadow of the tower. (OK, so to be actually correct, you'd have to be looking at exactly the same time of day as when the photo was taken -- which was, supposedly, during the night. But let's overlook that, shall we?) Note: Locating the specific spot where Catherine was buried is one of the most precise -- and frustrating -- puzzles in the game. You will most likely have to make many, many attempts before you will be successful.
4 of 11: From the fountain in front of the house, walk towards the path leading toward the greenhouse. Turn right on the red clay path leading toward the chapel.
5 of 11: Take one step forward along the path leading toward the chapel, and stop there. You've now reached the general location (see "a" above).
6 of 11: Pan slowly to the left, so that the scene rotates from left to right. Watch carefully on the ground, to see if you can spot the shadow of the mansion tower on the ground. (This is really tough, and may take some experimenting.) If you pan slowly to the left, the shadow should appear just slightly above mid-screen. Continue panning until the shadow is will into the picture -- perhaps a little to the left of center.
7 of 11: To try digging, take the shovel, and click it wherever the cursor indicates a possible digging spot. (The icon of the shovel will get brighter on any spot where you can dig.)
8 of 11: There are several possible responses to your request to dig. Michael may indicate that it's useless to dig there; or he may try to dig, only to find nothing at all; or -- if you're really lucky -- you'll turn up the remains of Catherine's body.
9 of 11: The actual spot where you will need to dig is only a couple of pixels wide -- this is the frustrating part. (To say nothing of the fact that, after each unsuccessful attempt, the shovel is returned to your inventory, and you have to go select it again!)
10 of 11: The key is to match up the very tip of the shovel with the very top of the shadow of the tower. Keep trying in that area, moving a few pixels at a time, until you are successful.
11 of 11: If you are having difficulty, you may refer to this Screen Shot of Catherine's Grave. Again, you may need to experiment within a few pixels of this area, as the game is quite "touchy" at this point. Eventually, if you dig in the right spot, you will find the remains of Catherine's body.
