No, you can't. Isn't it a pill? Very cinematic, of course, but it does seem to lower your life expectancy on occasion.
The only help I can offer is to point out that James will swivel his head to look at things he can interact with, whether pickups or demons. Just keep your eye on his head, and if he persists in staring at the floor or the right wall instead of straight ahead, turn the way he's looking and walk forward until you can see what he's so fascinated by.
