This is the closest this game gets to a happy ending.
-- Don't be suicidal: Keep your health high, don't look at Angela's knife in inventory more than once, don't read the diary more than once, and don't look at Mary's letter and photo more than once.
-- Don't pay much attention to Maria. Run when she's with you and don't look back (though you still have to keep her from being killed by random demons). At the hospital, after she goes down for a nap, don't go back to her room to see how she's doing. In the jail, don't go back to her room and talk to her a second time.
-- In the last hallway before you meet the Big Boss, don't listen to the conversation all the way to the end (presumably because it's another unhappy memory).
