The Testament of Sherlock Holmes Hints

How can I solve the fancy box puzzle?

  • 1 of 14: To start with, notice that there are four pieces that each have three jewels on them. Two of those pieces have all-red jewels, and two have all-green jewels.
  • 2 of 14: Those pieces will be used to form the center of your design. Look for light-colored slots that have three adjacent light-colored slots that other pieces can go in.
  • 3 of 14: You'll soon realize that no slot along the edge of the puzzle can work, so all the three-jewel pieces will have to go around the center.
  • 4 of 14: There are only two possible slots around the center for each piece, so it should be fairly easy to figure out how to place them.
  • 5 of 14: Think of the six light-colored slots that surround the puzzle's dark-colored center as being compass directions from the center. You'll find that the three-jewel pieces that have a jewel on their top edges can only go in the north and SE slots.
  • 6 of 14: Similarly, the three-jewel pieces that have a jewel on their bottom edges can only go in the south and NW slots.
  • 7 of 14: So put the three-jewel pieces in those slots, making sure to match the jewel colors on the pieces that end up next to each other.
  • 8 of 14: See the graphic below for one of two possible ways to do this. The other possibility has the green-jewel pieces NW of the center, and the red-jewel ones SE of it. (Note that the other six puzzle pieces aren't shown in the graphic because they're not relevant yet.)
  • 9 of 14: The next thing to do is figure out which two pieces go in the two remaining slots near the center, namely the ones that are NE and SW of the center.
  • 10 of 14: You'll obviously need to use the two pieces that have one of each color of jewel on them, but remember that you can't rotate pieces in this puzzle.
  • 11 of 14: Both of those pieces are oriented toward having the red-jewel pieces on top (north-ish) and the green-jewel pieces on bottom (south-ish).
  • 12 of 14: That means you'll have to place the four three-jewel pieces exactly as shown in the above graphic. If you put the green-jewel pieces NW of the puzzle center and the red-jewel pieces SE of it, you'll need to switch them.
  • 13 of 14: Check the graphic below to see how the puzzle will look (minus the four as-yet unused pieces) after you place the first six pieces correctly.
  • 14 of 14: Now it's just a matter of finding spots along the edge of the puzzle for the four remaining pieces. That, as Holmes would say, is simplicity itself.
