Silent Hill 3 Hints

Which difficulty levels should I choose?

  • Silent Hill 3 has two sets of difficulty levels for you two choose -- Action and Riddle.  For both, you initially have a choice between Easy, Normal, and Hard.

In Easy Action, healing items and ammo are abundant, enemies are relatively scarce and do relatively little damage when they attack, and enemies are significantly weaker than the other difficulties.
In Hard Action, enemies are very difficult to kill, their attacks are very strong, and there's a lot of 'em.
Normal Action is fairly balanced between the two other difficulties.

In Easy Riddle, puzzles are usually pretty much spelled out for you, you just have to put in the right code or combination.
On Normal Riddle, the puzzles will take a bit more thinking.  They won't be quite so obvious and may take a bit of time to figure out how best to proceed.
On Hard Riddle, be prepared to do some research to get through that locked door.  The puzzles will be very difficult, sometimes requiring you to bring in outside knowledge to figure them out.  It can be fun, but it can also be quite an undertaking.

If you keep dying on Easy Action, Beginner Action will be opened for you.  Try Beginner Action if you want an easier gameplay experience.

After beating Hard Action, you'll open Extreme I Action.  Beat Extreme I to open up Extreme II.  Beat Extremes II-IX to open up Extreme X Action, the most difficult Action setting available.

I suggest most players choose Normal Action and Normal Riddle their first time through.  Players new to Silent Hill or adventure games in general, however, may choose Easy Action, especially if you try Normal and keep dying.  Veterans to Silent Hill, on the other hand, may prefer Hard Action for more of a challenge.  As for Riddle difficulty, just choose depending on how much experience you have with puzzles and logical thinking (and be honest with yourself, or else the game will be no fun), or simply on how much you want to think about puzzles.
