Silver Hints
In General
During the game you should always be on the offensive -- I almost never used my shield during the game. The only time I use blocking/dodging is when I faced Apocalypse himself. The reason for this is simple: most enemies aren't that dangerous and most of them will continue to attack you if you keep on blocking, so eventually the shield will be wasted.
Always use the strongest weapon available. However, if you are using long-range weapons, you should use the one with the highest efficiency. For example, an arrow can sometimes reach certain characters on elevated spots, while knives or axes don't (since they travel in a straight line to the target). It also doesn't make any sense to activate a lever with a fire bow (for example) if you could have used your catapult.
