How can I make the most of these random items?
1 of 3: Many supply crates and other item containers have randomly chosen items in them. Due to the checkpoint save system, it's not usually worth it to reload a save in hopes of getting something better from a container.
2 of 3: However, when there's no combat and not much travel between a checkpoint save and a container, it can be worth reloading if you get something useless from the container the first time (like a stimpack would be in this case). Trying again might get you something useful, like a health pack or E99 tech.
3 of 3: For example, if you want E99 tech from the crate here and it has something else, reload your checkpoint save and go straight to the crate to see if you get E99 tech. If not, try again until you do. Only then should you go around and get all the non-random supplies -- you don't want to waste time getting them when there's a chance that you'll do a reload.
