Why is there an oxygen meter?
1 of 3: Because the gas mask can't provide unlimited clean air.
2 of 3: You'll have to pick up oxygen bottles every now and then to restore the meter.
3 of 3: Note that there are three oxygen bottles in the room you drop into, though picking them all up right away isn't possible since your oxygen meter will be full. It's better to save them for later (though not much later, since the room's doors will close and lock behind you when you leave).
