New Alchemy Ingredients
Hearthfire adds two new alchemy ingredients, both of which are very rare. Their alchemy effects are summarized below.
Hawk's eggs can only be gotten from hawks' nests, and they can only be found on top of the main hall of the houses you build in Falkreath Hold and The Pale Hold. To get onto the main hall's roof, you need to build at least one tower add-on wing (library, alchemy lab, or enchanter's tower). Enter the tower from the upper floor of the main hall, then use the ladder to get onto the tower's upper balcony. Jump over its railing to get onto the main hall's roof, then move along it to reach the hawks' nest. (Note that the house you build in Hjaalmarch Hold has an ordinary bird's nest on the roof that gives a rock warbler egg.)
Salmon roe can mainly be gotten from salmon who are swimming upstream to spawn. It's extremely hard, but you'll need to nab the salmon as they swim up a small waterfall, like the ones you can find along the path that leads from the Guardian Stones to Riverwood. You can also get one portion of salmon roe from each manor's kitchen after you build it and make the round table for it. (There's also a glitch that allows you to kill salmon with a bow and then loot them to get salmon roe.)
Hawk's eggs are identical to chicken's eggs, and are therefore not really worth bothering with. However, salmon roe can be used to make superior Waterbreathing and Fortify Magicka potions. With Waterbreathing potions, salmon roe tremendously increases the duration of the potion effect. With Fortify Magicka potions, it'll tremendously increase the magnitude of the effect while also tremendously decreasing the duration of the effect. Such potions would only be useful to drink right before casting a spell that requires a huge amount of magicka, like a master-level spell.
