The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Add-Ons (DLC) Hints
Find Arvak's skull in the Soul Cairn.
1 of 6: While doing the "Beyond Death" main-line quest, you'll get this quest from a soul standing on the path as you make your way to where Valerica is being held prisoner.
2 of 6: After finding and talking to Valerica, go back down the steps to the ground, then head due east until you reach a sparkling crystal crater.
3 of 6: Look a short way south of it for a tall lit-up structure. Approach it to be attacked by several mistmen.
4 of 6: Finish them off, then look on the pedestal in the center of the structure to find Arvak's skull.
5 of 6: Take it, then kill off any other nearby hostiles to get the soul who gave you the quest to appear nearby.
6 of 6: Follow the quest arrow to him, then talk to him to get the Summon Arvak Conjuration spell, which will work both in the Soul Cairn and outside of it. It basically gives you a free summonable horse. (The spell lasts for only one minute, but Arvak won't ever disappear while you're riding him.)
