The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Add-Ons (DLC) Hints
The Ghost of Karstaag.
of 8: The first thing to do is get Karstaag's skull, which is in the Glacial Cave.
of 8: Enter the cave and watch out for riekling ambushers as you move to the back, where you'll find the skull embedded in the ice.
of 8: After taking it, you'll need to enter Castle Karstaag's old throne room. You can do that by traveling to the Castle Karstaag Ruins and picking the master-level lock on the courtyard door.
of 8: As an alternative, you can enter the Castle Karstaag Caverns and make your way through them. It's a fairly linear path, but you will need to fight or sneak through several riekling camps.
of 8: Once in the throne room, kill off all the rieklings, then go up to the big icy throne that's at the north end of the area and quicksave.
of 8: Activate the throne to place Karstaag's skull on it, then quickly back up and prepare to fight a large and powerful frost giant ghost. (Note that if you sprint a ways south and crouch down fast enough, you may be able to start off with a sneak attack.)
of 8: Karstaag has a huge number of hit points and a health regeneration effect on him, and he can summon ice wraiths to help him. To have any hope of killing him, you'll need to be able to deal out tremendous damage very rapidly. Use all your best equipment and potions, your most powerful follower and summoned creature, etc.
of 8: If you manage to kill him, you can loot his ghostly remains for a few items, but the real reward is a new power that you can use once a day in outdoor areas to summon Karstaag's ghost to fight for you for 120 seconds. You can only use that power a total of three times, so save it for really special occasions.
