The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Add-Ons (DLC) Hints

Deceiving the Herd

  • 1 of 7: Anytime after finishing the "The Bloodstone Chalice" main-line quest, ask anyone in the castle what you can do to help, and the game will randomly choose a side quest. If it's this one, go talk to Feran Sadri to start it.
  • 2 of 7: Go to the randomly chosen city (often Riften), put on the Dawnguard armor items Sadri gave you, and then kill someone in public (meaning out on the streets rather than inside a house or shop).
  • 3 of 7: You can kill a minor character who isn't a noble or merchant, but then you'd fail the optional objective of making a high-profile kill. However, that can be better than permanently losing a merchant, especially if it's one you frequently do business with.
  • 4 of 7: You can make a stealthy kill in order to avoid the bounty, but you'll fail the optional objective of making a public kill.
  • 5 of 7: You can also avoid a bounty by killing someone while in vampire lord form, but that will also fail the public kill objective (because you can't wear Dawnguard armor in vampire lord form). If you want to do it anyway, find an obscure corner where you can transform unseen, then go kill someone. Sprint to the city exit and run off somewhere so you can transform back unseen.
  • 6 of 7: Once you kill someone, transfer the incriminating letter from the "Books" section of your inventory to their body. Fast-travel away if you can, and make a run for it otherwise.
  • 7 of 7: Return to Castle Volkihar and report to Feran Sadri to get a random, leveled weapon or apparel item. If you don't like what you get, you can restore the autosave that was made when you entered the keep and try again. Doing that may also alter which randomized quest you get next.
