The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Talk to Brynjolf.
1 of 6: Reclaim your confiscated gear from one of the chests in the secret room, then leave the inn and go to Riften. (If you don't want to take a carriage, fast-travel to Ivarstead, then follow the river east.)
2 of 6: When you approach Riften's gate, one of the guards will try to extort a "visitor's tax" from you (if this is your first visit). You can either pay it or try to persuade or intimidate your way out of paying.
3 of 6: After you enter Riften, follow the quest arrow to find Brynjolf, who'll be inside the Bee and Barb inn (if it's night) or in his stall in the marketplace just south of the inn (daytime).
4 of 6: Walk up to him to get him to talk to you, then say that you're looking for an old man who's hiding out in Riften.
5 of 6: If you've already done the first Thieves Guild faction quest or can pass a persuade check, Brynjolf will help you right away.
6 of 6: Otherwise, either do his quest or skip it by asking Keerava at the inn's counter about the old man you're looking for. Either way gets you the next objective.
