The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Defeat Ancano.
1 of 5: Open the gate and enter the Eye of Magnus' chamber, but don't bother attacking Ancano yet -- he's invincible for now.
2 of 5: Wait until he hits Tolfdir (and your follower, if you have one) with a paralysis spell, then wait a bit more until the Eye opens up and emits a bright flash.
3 of 5: Zap the Eye with the Staff of Magnus for a couple of seconds, then check Ancano to see if he still has a glowing magical field on him. If he does, zap the Eye with the staff a bit more until his magical field vanishes.
4 of 5: He'll then be vulnerable, so zap him with the staff, a conjured creature, and whatever else you have. When his health gets low, he'll draw some more power from the Eye to reestablish his magical invulnerability field.
5 of 5: Recharge the Staff of Magnus if necessary with soul gems you brought with you, then zap the Eye with the staff to make Ancano vulnerable again. Hopefully, you'll be able to finish him off before he can get his magic field back again. (And before too many of those annoying magic anomaly creatures can appear and cause you trouble.)
