The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Craft an Iron Dagger.
of 8: This is basically a crafting tutorial quest for the Smithing skill. (Note that there are similar quests for Alchemy and Enchanting, but there's so little to them that I decided not to put anything about them in these hints.)
of 8: You can do this quest with Alvor in Riverwood or Adrianne Avenicci in Whiterun (but not both). Find whichever one you want to do the quest for in his forge area during the day, then ask him if he needs any help around the forge to get this objective. (I'll assume you're doing this with Alvor to avoid having to refer to both people in the hints below.)
of 8: Use the blacksmith forge, then go to the "Iron" section of its menu and choose to create an iron dagger.
of 8: Talk to Alvor about the iron dagger, then use the nearby grindstone to sharpen it.
of 8: Talk to Alvor about the sharpened dagger, then go to the tanning rack and turn the deer hide he gave you into leather.
of 8: Talk to Alvor about the leather he wanted, then use the blacksmith forge again. Go to the "Hide" section this time and choose to create a hide helmet.
of 8: Talk to Alvor about the hide helmet, then use the workbench to improve it.
of 8: Talk to Alvor about the tempered hide helmet to finish the quest, with your reward being that you can keep what you made.
