The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Find Esbern in the Ratway Warrens.
1 of 6: Use the door that's to the right of the bar counter to enter the Ratway Vaults, then crouch down. There are several Thalmor soldiers and mages in the area.
2 of 6: If you want to avoid combat, move straight forward and look down to see an open metal door on the lower floor. Quickly drop down there and go through the door, then turn right and run for the door to the Ratway Warrens area.
3 of 6: In the warrens, move down the steps, then either pick open the door on the right or go around to get to the room that's past it.
4 of 6: Go up the stone steps and watch out for a couple of crazy characters who may attack you as you make your way to the door that's at the south end of the upstairs area.
5 of 6: Use the door to get Esbern to talk to you, then persuade him to open up.
6 of 6: The only way to do that is to use the dialogue option about the 30th of Frostfall when it comes up.
