The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
How can I learn new spells?
1 of 6: You'll mainly learn new spells from spell tomes that you find or buy. Locate them in the "Books" section of your inventory and read them in order to learn their spells.
2 of 6: If you don't want to rely on getting spells from the tomes that appear in random loot, check the merchants in all of the cities and towns to see which tomes they sell.
3 of 6: The best spell merchants are the mages in the College of Winterhold. Specifically, Tolfdir sells Alteration spells, Phinis Gestor sells Conjuration spells, Faralda sells Destruction spells, Drevis Neloren sells Illusion spells, and Colette Marence sells Restoration spells.
4 of 6: Each of them will sell tomes for every standard spell in his field, all the way up through expert-level spells once your related skill is high enough.
5 of 6: To get master-level spells, you'll need to do the ritual spell side quests. See the College's Side Quests for details on those.
6 of 6: There are a few spells, listed below, which you won't ever be able to get from the five above-mentioned mages.
