The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints

Alteration

  • 1 of 6: The Oakflesh spell is a fairly good one to practice with, but you have to be under attack either when you cast the spell or before it wears off in order to get any skill practice.
  • 2 of 6: If you cast a Conjuration spell that summons a creature, you can then cast Oakflesh, hit the creature with a weapon or combat spell until it turns hostile, and then let it hit you at least once. (Note that letting it attack you repeatedly won't get you any more Alteration practice, so you might as well kill it unless you want to practice something else on it.)
  • 3 of 6: Two good alternatives are Telekinesis and Waterbreathing, though they'll both take up a lot of magicka fast. It's best to have a bunch of cheap Restore Magicka potions that you made yourself to help speed up the practice. Any apparel that reduces the cost of casting Alteration spells would also be helpful.
  • 4 of 6: Drop a large item on the ground anywhere and cast Telekinesis on it to hold it until you run out of magicka. Wait until your magicka regenerates (or use some potions), then repeat.
  • 5 of 6: With Waterbreathing, stand next to a deep pool of water and cast the spell, then go underwater briefly to get practice credit. Don't wait for the spell to wear off, but leave the water and cast it again as soon as you can.
  • 6 of 6: You could also cast Detect Life over and over in populated areas, though it's another real magicka hog.
