The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Talk to Gerdur in Riverwood.
1 of 4: Even though he says you should split up, Ralof will wait for you to follow him. You don't have to, but it would be a good idea to follow him to Riverwood, even if you don't plan on finishing this quest anytime soon.
2 of 4: Look for harvestable plants and wolves to fight as you follow Ralof, and check out the three Guardian Stones when you reach their area. You can examine them and choose which one to receive a blessing from. (See the Skill Practicing Tips for more details.)
3 of 4: After you reach Riverwood, follow Ralof over to where his sister Gerdur is working.
4 of 4: Listen to them and follow them around until Gerdur talks to you. Take any or all of the gift items she offers you, then go check out her house before starting on the new "Talk to the Jarl of Whiterun" objective.
