The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Slay Mercer Frey.
1 of 4: You'll be stuck fighting Mercer Frey alone in a fairly large area that includes stairs that lead up to a spot next to the giant idol's head.
2 of 4: You could use the stairs to keep circling around the chamber, trying to keep out of Mercer's reach while hitting him with spells, summoned creatures, or whatever.
3 of 4: He'll turn himself invisible frequently, so use the red blip on the compass to help track him. Also, use the Detect Life scrolls you hopefully picked up earlier and/or a Detect Life spell.
4 of 4: An easier way would be to look to the right (west) of where you are right after Mercer talks to you. There's a small depression next to some rubble that you can crouch down in to be safe from attack. From there, you can use spells or a magic staff to summon creatures to fight Mercer for you. (Note that coming out of the depression occasionally to lure Mercer in may help with that, since he tends to run up to the idol's head whenever he can't attack you.)
