Take the Oghma Infinium.
1 of 3: Take the weird book and go back the way you came to encounter the "wretched abyss" again.
2 of 3: Activate it to talk to Hermaeus Mora and finish the quest, then go to the "books" section of your inventory.
3 of 3: Read the Oghma Infinium book and choose a path when the option comes up. You only get one choice, and it'll affect which of your skills get permanent +5 bonuses.
