The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
How can I open the gate at the north end of the bandit's chamber?
of 12: That big lever in the center of the floor looks tempting -- at least, it does if you fought the bandit instead of watching him use the lever and get killed by a trap.
of 12: TIP: You can hit the lever over and over again, healing yourself with the Healing spell each time, to get Restoration skill practice. This will be particularly effective if you got the blessing from the mage stone at the Guardian Stones area and slept an hour in a bed in Riverwood right before coming here.
of 12: The lever is the gate-opening gimmick, but you apparently have to set something else before using it. Look around the chamber for other interactive items.
of 12: Along the west wall are three interactive pillars with animal designs carved on them. Try using them.
of 12: You'll find that each pillar can be turned to show a whale, a falcon, or a snake. Perhaps if those pillars were set to a certain pattern.
of 12: Look around the chamber for anything else that has those three animal symbols carved on it.
of 12: There's a large stone head on the floor near the lever. It has a snake symbol on it.
of 12: Look up above the gate to see where it came from.
of 12: It's apparently supposed to be up on the wall between two other large stone heads, both of which have animal carvings on them.
of 12: Imagine the fallen head back up on the wall where it was, and you'll have the sequence for the pillars.
of 12: Set the left and middle pillars to the snake design, and set the right pillar to the whale design.
of 12: Now you can use the lever to open the gate instead of getting pelted by darts.
