The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Bring the Star to Aranea or Bring the Star to Nelacar.
1 of 4: Use the ladder on the NE side of the room to get back outside, then decide who to take the broken star to: Aranea or Nelacar.
2 of 4: You'll get a reusable soul gem as a reward either way, but there are a few differences based on your choice.
3 of 4: If you return to the Shrine of Azura and give the star to Aranea, she'll become a powerful follower after the quest is over. If you return to Winterhold's inn and hand the star over to Nelacar, you won't get any new followers, but you will get a variant of Azura's Star that can be used to capture NPC souls.
4 of 4: NOTE: The Black Star can supposedly be used to capture *only* NPC souls, but it seems to also work with others. Hopefully, this isn't an oversight that'll be "fixed" in a game update.
