1 of 3: This objective is there to give you an idea of how much of the Stormcloak force is still alive.
2 of 3: You don't actually need to kill any of them yourself, but the battle will be long and drawn-out if you don't. It's best to have a follower and summoned creature to help out, plus do a lot of slashing (or ranged attacks) yourself.
3 of 3: After all of the Stormcloaks are killed, you'll get the "Reunification of Skyrim" quest, plus a miscellaneous objective to report to the Jarl of Whiterun. You might as well do it first if you're going to. (Note that he'll be addressing the troops near the main gate.)
