The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints

The "Take Them As You Go" Level-Up Strategy

  • 1 of 4: This strategy has you take every level-up as soon as you get it. This has the obvious advantage of you being able to add points to your primary attributes and get skill-enhancing perks much earlier than if you were using the other level-up strategy.
  • 2 of 4: Another advantage is that you can buy five points of skill training after each level-up. That is, if you can hunt up the trainers for the skills that you want to buy training in, and have enough money to pay for the training.
  • 3 of 4: The main disadvantage is that you'll have to very carefully control any and all activities that could increase a skill. You don't want to level up too fast, and you don't want to miss out on the "five points of training between each level" thing (especially since that's one of the very few advantages of this strategy).
  • 4 of 4: You could carefully avoid getting skill increases while doing the first two main quests, then buy five points of training from an easy-to-find trainer (like Faendal in Riverwood). After that, practice skills enough to get a level-up, buy five more points of training, practice skills until you get another level-up, and so on. That could get pretty expensive, though, unless you pickpocket the money back after every training session (and that'll quickly raise your Pickpocket skill, which you may not want).
