The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints

Sneak

  • 1 of 8: The safest and easiest way to practice this skill is to use the first big skill-practicing opportunity in the first main quest. Keep hitting Hadvar or Ralof (whomever you're with) in the back with a one-handed weapon every five or so seconds.
  • 2 of 8: Later on, you can do the same sort of thing with summoned creatures. Crouch down and summon a weak creature (like a familiar), then wait five seconds before hitting him with a one-handed weapon. Wait five more seconds and hit him again, then keep it up until he disappears.
  • 3 of 8: If you'd rather practice Sneak by sneaking around, find a dark corner in an inn or whatever that's near someone, then auto-run into it. Use Muffle and/or Invisibility spells to help you sneak successfully.
  • 4 of 8: Remember to keep checking your stealth indicator to make sure you're not seen, and your Sneak practice progress in the Skills menu to make sure you're actually getting practice credit. (This game seems to be very erratic and finicky about that.)
  • 5 of 8: If you're in a large area with enemies nearby, you can do the same thing as long as you're not close enough to them to be detected.
  • 6 of 8: If the enemies are fairly distant, or if there's no way for them to run over to your position, you should be able to crouch-run around (or into a dark corner) to get Sneak practice with very little chance of being detected.
  • 7 of 8: Or you can stay in one place and fire arrows so that they hit near an enemy, which will make him search around near the spot where the arrow hit. As long as he doesn't detect you, you'll be getting Sneak practice even if you're not moving.
  • 8 of 8: Note that if you hit a distant enemy with an arrow, he'll probably come after you if there's a way for him to get to you. That'll be a problem if there isn't something you can quickly hide behind. (If there is, you can wait there until he gives up and returns to his previous position.)
