The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Alteration Ritual Spell
of 8: Get your Alteration skill all the way up to 90 or higher, then ask Tolfdir if there's anything more you can learn about Alteration magic. (Note that you'll have to finish the "First Lessons" main-line quest first if you haven't already.)
of 8: The special dagger you need is in a randomly chosen dragon-priest-inhabited dungeon. Dragon priests are tremendously powerful mages, so you'll want to bring along your best equipment, a follower, a staff or spell that summons an atronach, lots of healing potions, etc.
of 8: Make this quest active to see which dragon priest dungeon you need to go to, then travel there and start fighting your way through it. See the "Masks of the Dragon Priests" undocumented quest for more info about each dragon priest dungeon.
of 8: After you meet and defeat the dragon priest, look around nearby for a chest with the Kahvozein's Fang dagger in it.
of 8: Once you have it, you'll need a dead dragon to loot. If you haven't finished the Main Quest called "Dragon Rising" yet, go do that.
of 8: If you've already done that quest, return to the Western Watchtower to see if Mirmulnir's body is still there. If it isn't, check the site of your most recent dragon slaying. If you can't find any already-dead dragons, go look for a live one to kill at a dragon lair. (Or just fast-travel around until you get a random dragon attack.)
of 8: To get the special heartscales that you need, equip the Kahvozein's Fang dagger and loot the body of a dead dragon. You won't find heartscales in the dragon's inventory -- you'll just automatically get them. (Note that this may not work with Mirmulnir for some reason, in which case you'll have to go kill another dragon.)
of 8: Once you have dragon heartscales, give them to Tolfdir to finish the quest and get a spell tome for the Dragonhide spell. You can also then buy a spell tome for Mass Paralysis from him.
