The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints
Talk to Alvor in Riverwood.
1 of 4: Even though he says you should split up, Hadvar will wait for you to follow him. You don't have to, but it would be a good idea to follow him to Riverwood, even if you don't plan on finishing this quest anytime soon.
2 of 4: Look for harvestable plants and wolves to fight as you follow Hadvar, and check out the three Guardian Stones when you reach their area. You can examine them and choose which one to receive a blessing from. (See the Skill Practicing Tips for more details.)
3 of 4: After you reach Riverwood, follow Hadvar into Alvor and Sigrid's house if you want to continue this quest right away.
4 of 4: Wait until Alvor talks to you, then take any or all of the gift items he offers you. You'll then get the "Talk to the Jarl of Whiterun" objective. (If you went off and did other things before visiting Alvor, talk to him and ask about supplies in order to get the gifts and the objective.)
