System Shock 2 Hints
Laser Pistol
The laser pistol may seem like a weak weapon at first, but it has a very fast recovery time in normal mode. Some of the weaker opponents (like monkeys or hybrids or maybe some of the cyborgs) can be "stunned" by rapid fire of the pistol at normal level. That is, your opponent may take a bit to recover after you hit it before it can attack you. Keep shooting before it has a chance to recover, and it may never get a shot in. Overload mode can do more damage, but only at the cost of much longer recovery times -- and I often preferred the rapid fire of normal mode.
Also, keep in mind that energy weapons do not work very well against pure annelids. If you have more than the basic skill of Energy Weapons 1, you can shoot those annoying grubs and pods with a laser pistol to save ammunition, but taking on stronger annelids (or any strong opponents) with this weapon at any level is not recommended.
