System Shock 2 Hints

Which OS upgrades should I select?

  • 1 of 2: As always, what you choose depends on what kind of character you have.  But read ahead for some general recommendations.
  • 2 of 2: Cyber-Assimilation: In theory, getting repair units worth extra hit points from destroyed robots sounds good.  However, you can't pick up anything from the protocol droids, and if you hack turrets, you won't get repair units from them.  Replicator Expert or Pharmo-Friendly to make medical hypos cheaper or more effective may be a better way to gain hit points.

Cybernetically Enhanced: Being able to carry a second implant is certainly worth the upgrade.  The upgrades of Pack-Rat, Speedy, Tank, and to a lesser extent, Security Expert, essentially duplicate some of the effects of a second implant.  (For example, one extra unit of STR gives you 3 more inventory slots like Pack-Rat, but the strength implant also gives you extra melee damage.)  Plus, you can swap out implants at will, but you can't undo an OS upgrade.

Lethal Weapon: If you're planning on using a lot of melee attacks, a 50% bonus to your damage is significant.  You won't always be able to use melee attacks against every opponent, but 50% is still a lot.  Smasher isn't as effective but might still be worth taking if you really like melee fighting.

Naturally Able: Compared to the hundreds of cyber modules you'll find throughout the game, a measly 8 module bonus pales in comparison.  In the long run, you're better off passing here.

Pharmo-Friendly: You'll find quite a few medical and psi hypos on bodies, in desks, etc.  Unless you're playing at a high difficulty, you'll probably find enough other healing devices (full medical kits, surgical units, etc.) that you won't need the bonus on the med hypos.  Psi points tend to be harder to come by, especially if you're playing as a psi user, so getting an extra 20% out of them may help.  Still, also consider Replicator Expert to make those hypos cheaper to buy.

Power PSI: With a high PSI stat, burnout isn't all that likely (as long as you have a good reaction time) nor is it very damaging, but if you find you're losing a lot of health to psi burnout with a relatively high PSI, you may need this.

Replicator Expert: A 20% reduction in replicator costs can be very helpful, especially earlier in the game, when nanites are in shorter supply.

Sharpshooter: A 25% bonus to range attacks can certainly come in handy. Unless you plan on sticking to psionic or melee attacks, this one is worth selecting eventually.

Spatially Aware: Nothing else in the game can duplicate the effects of upgrade, and having filled-in maps might help you find upgrade units, resurrection stations, and the like.  Whether this upgrade is better than your other options, however, is probably a matter of personal style.  Also note that there are no auto-maps on the last three levels, so if you do want to take this upgrade, take it earlier rather than later.

Strong Metabolism: I didn't find radiation and toxins serious enough to spend an OS upgrade on this.  You can always use psi powers, hypos, and armor to reduce damage.

Tinker: Since you only need to modify each weapon twice, saving 50% on the modification cost doesn't seem like a significant bonus.  Also consider French-Epstein Devices for free weapons upgrades.  But if you're still often short on nanites and have already tried Replicator Expert, this upgrade could still help.
